the sound t as in "toe"
the sound d as in "do"
the sound th as in "the"
These are similar sounds.  The sound d is voiced (you use both your voice box and your mouth to say d),
whereas the sound t is unvoiced (you do not use your voice box.)
To remember that these sounds make 1 you might think of the letter t as having one central stroke down.
Double-t or double-d as in add or witty, counts as a single 1.
