the sound f as in "hoof"
the sound v as in "ivy"
the sound ph as in "phooey"
the gh sound as in "enough"
the sound lf as in "half"
These are similar sounds.  The sound v is voiced (you use both your voice box and your mouth to say v),
whereas the f sound is unvoiced (you do not use your voice box.)
To remember that these sounds make 8 you might think of the script f with two closed loops, resembling the number 8.
Double-f as in off, counts as a single 8.
