the sound p as in "ape"
the sound b as in "bee"
These are similar sounds.  The sound b is voiced (you use both your voice box and your mouth to say b),
whereas the p sound is unvoiced (you do not use your voice box.)
To remember that these sounds make 9 you might think of the number 9 as resembling a backward p or an upside down b.
Double-p and double-b, as in happy and hobby, count as a single 9.
