I Baskerland i Spania finner man sannsynligvis verdens mest vellykkede
forsøk med arbeiderstyrte bedrifter - de såkalte
Mondragon-kooperativene (faktisk: Et KONSERN med 27000 ansatte!). Sjekk

MONDRAGON CORPORACION COOPERATIVA (MCC) began its
activities in the Basque town of Mondragon, thanks to the drive of an
exceptional man: Don Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta.(idealistisk og radikal
katolsk prest, min merknad, TA).

His first initiative was the creation of the Polytechnic School, today
Mondragon Eskola Politeknikoa, in 1943. In 1956, five young men, who had
studied at this school, created Ulgor, today Fagor Electrodomesticos,
the embryo of the present-day MCC in historic terms. Later, new
co-operatives emerged. The creation in 1959 of the bank Caja L aboral,
a credit co-operative, stands out, as this entity has had a key role in
t he promotion and development of our co-operative enterprises. Today
MCC is the leading business group in the Basque Country and eleventh in
the ranking of top spanish companies.

MCC - BASIC PRINCIPLES:

I. OPEN MEMBERSHIP

This principle declares that we are open to all men and women who can
dem onstrate their professional capabilities for the jobs we are able
to create.

II. DEMOCRATIC ORGANISATION

Based on the equality of all our worker members, this principle
establish es one person one vote as the basis of our democratic
organisation.

III. WORKER SOVEREIGNTY

The main agent for transforming nature, society and people themselves
and therefore, deserving of the distribution of the wealth produced.

IV. INSTRUMENTAL AND SUBORDINATE NATURE OF CAPITAL

Capital is an instrument subordinate to labour, and necessary for
business development. It is deserving of limited remuneration, not
directly linked to the results obt ained.

V. MANAGEMENT PARTICIPATION

This implies the progressive development of self-management with the
participation of members in business management.

VI. WAGE SOLIDARITY

In accordance with the actual possibilities of each co-operative
enterprise and in solidarity with the rest of the Corporation and the
social environment.

VII. CO-OPERATION BETWEEN CO-OPERATIVES

This involves searching for potential synergies derived from overall
size: the pooling of profits and the transfer of worker-members.

VIII. SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

The creation of new co-operative jobs and support for community
development initiatives through the majority reinvestment of profits.

IX. UNIVERSAL NATURE

Supportive of all those who work for social democracy, sharing
objectives of peace, justice and development.

X. EDUCATION

The dedication of sufficient human and economic resources for
co-operative and professional training.
