We welcome you to attend the PSE'97 / ESCAPE-7 symposium in Trondheim, Norway
during 25-29 May 1997. This is the main world-wide event in 1997 in the
area of chemical process systems engineering.

The symposium will bring together engineers and scientists from universities,
R&D laboratories, and the process industries to focus attention on the use
of new information technology tools and methods in the design and operation
of the chemical process industry.
The symposium covers the areas of design and synthesis, control and operations,
modelling and simulation, and intelligent systems. Thursday 29 May
has been designated as an "industrial focus day".

>From the more than 600 abstracts that were submitted for review, an
excellent technical program of about 200 papers has been put together.

PSE'97 / ESCAPE-7 is organized by the Center for Process Systems
Engineering (PROST) at the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology (NTNU). It follows the previous PSE symposium in Kyongju, Korea
in 1994 and the previous ESCAPE symposium in Rhodes, Greece in 1996.

Immediately prior to the symposium, two workshops will be organized -
one with focus on Process Integration, the other one on Process
Operations.

Program overview
=================
For a detailed session program see http://www.kjemi.unit.no/psescape-97.

The meeting starts on Sunday 25 May 1997 at 1900 with a welcoming reception.

Each of the days Monday to Thursday starts with an invited
plenary lecture followed by contributed lectures that have been selected
as plenaries by the scientific comittees. In the afternoons, oral
presentations will be given in parallel sessions.

Tuesday afternoon and evening there will be a poster session
(with soft drinks and beer).

The symposium dinner will be on Wednesday 28 May at Statoil's Research
Center in Trondheim.

Thursday has been selected as an industrial focus
day. In the morning there will be a plenary discussion session with a
number of distinguished panel members from industry and academia. The
discussion will focus on:
"Open standards, and industry - academia interactions".
Thursday afternoon one of the sessions is on "Industrial
applications and case studies" where a number of interesting industrial
papers are presented.
The meeting ends on Thursday 29 May 1700-1900 with a "closing drinks" session.

INVITED PLENARY SPEAKERS:
"Designing the process design process",
Art Westerberg, Carnegie Mellon Univ., USA
"Systems design: Human considerations in the future of technology",
Howard H. Rosenbrock, UK
"Model predictive control: Past, present and future",
Manfred Morari, ETH, Switzerland and Jay H. Lee, Auburn Univ., USA
"Computers, models and the real world - a viewpoint from the process industry",
Knut Harg, Research Director, Norsk Hydro, Norway
