Abstract

The issue of using Process Systems Engineering to address waste
and waste water minimization is discussed at three levels:

1) Where is waste generated ?
2) Efficient use of Wastewater
3) Optimal Effluent Treatment

The first item (1) will discuss the sources of waste in order to
point to ways to eliminate waste at source. The second item (2)
looks at ways to efficiently use, reuse, regenerate and recycle
water to remove waste from the process streams. Finally, the
downstream treatment of the produced wastewater is discussed
in the last item (3).

Two methodologies have been used to address these problems:

1) Graphical Diagrams and methods from Pinch Technology
2) Optimization techniques such as Mathematical Programming

The seminar will show how these methods can be used effectively
to address and optimize problems related to Waste generation,
removal of waste by water and treatment of the effluent water.
