1,1’-Disubstituent-4,4’-bipyridilium compounds commonly known as “viologens” have been extensively studied because of their potential as electron transfer reagents. These compounds undergo a one-electron reduction to give colored radical cations.
In this communication we report the synthesis of some 3,4-bis(bipyridilium chloride) maleimides prepared via a substitution reaction on 3,4-dihalomaleimides using the 4,4’-bipyridyl as nucleophile. These new derivatives are deeply colored on the contrary to commonly known viologens, indicating an optical charge transfer with the counter anion.
We found that these compounds exhibit a reversible, pH depended, halochromism either in aqueous or in polar organic solvents solutions. We are investigating the electrochromic behavior of series of such derivatives under various types of electrochromic displays. Some preliminary results from these methodologies will be presented.
