Over the last few years AstraZeneca PR&D Södertälje has evaluated the use of continuous reactors in pharmaceutical process development. This work has involved the construction of simple small scale CSTR and tubular reactors as well as a more thorough evaluation of the Alfa Laval PR-Lab reactor.

The PR-Lab unit, the smallest model in a range of continuous reactors that is claimed to allow easy scale up from laboratory to production, has been evaluated in terms of:

· Heat transfer capacity
· Mixing capacity
· Flow characteristics
· Ease of Operation

Besides this, the results from different types of reactions will also be presented. Finally conclusions are made regarding the benefits of this technology and its application for process intensification.
