Abstract: heavy metals removal from water and wastewater were tested by using raw and modified diatomite of Iran’s mines. Modification of diatomite was done by impregnating of diatomite surface with 0.35 gr of manganese oxide on one gram of diatomite which increases 2.2 fold in absorbent surface area. This modified diatomite named Mn-Diatomite Experiments show an increase in adsorption capacity after modification which was for Pb from 56.8 to 75, for Ni from 66.6 to 88.6 and for Cu from 86 to 100 percent The removal capacity for Cu by Mn-diatomite was higher than other ions, and the absorbance was nearly complete in all concentrations. The filtration quality of diatomite was significantly enhanced with surface modification by manganese oxide
