Exam in 75908 Nonlinear PDEs

There was an oral examination, approx. 45 minutes per candidate. You start by giving a 20 minute minilecture over one of the following topics:

  1. Entropy conditions for scalar equations
  2. The Riemann problem for genuinely nonlinear systems
("small" data, i.e., the left and right states close together)
  3. The Riemann problem for isothermal gas dynamics
  4. Godunov's method
  5. Properties of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme
  6. Properties of the Lax-Wendroff scheme
  7. Numerical diffusion and dispersion (modified equations)
  8. Why use total variation diminishing methods?
  9. Flux-limiter methods

Each candidate was assigned one of the above topics by lottery.
