Distillation is considered to be the most important separation process, and it is also a major consumer of energy. At the Department of Chemical Engineering at NTNU there is a strong activity in design, control and optimization of continous and batch distillation. For example, we have available the first apparatus for multivessel batch distillation in the world. We cooperate with research groups all over the world.

We are looking for a Ph.D. candidate to take part in this work. The focus will be on new energy-efficient distillation processes. Two possible topics are:

1.New processes for batch distillation (e.g. heterogeneous mixtures and use of multivessel column). 2.Operation and design of integrated continous columns (e.g. Petlyuk (direct coupled) distillation processes).

The work is primarily theoretical, but experimental work may also be included. The project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR).

Within the university there is a strong activity in the field og process systems engineering (modelling, control, dynamics, optimization and systematic design of chemical processes) organized by the strong point center PROST. Within PROST there is a close cooperation with other departments at NTNU as well with the affiliated research lab SINTEF.

The candidate should have a strong background in chemical engineering (corresponding to about 5 years of university studies). Women are especially encouraged to apply. Preferably, the candidate should be a citizen of the European Union or the European Economic Area, or hold a valid Norwegian work permit. However, exceptional applicants from other countries may also be considered.

The annual salary is NOK 236 700 (USD 31500) (lønnstrinn 32). The candidate will enter into a Ph.D. program. The fellowship is for three years, and since the normal time to complete a Ph.D. is over four years, some teaching duties may be expected to extend the fellowship period.

Expected start: August 1999 - January 2000 (flexible)

Application deadline: 30 June 1999
