Optimization Under Uncertainty
Synopsis: Starting with the simplified trade-off analyses used in Systems
Engineering, where the future Life Cycle scenarios are associated with
probabilities, the talk will demonstrate a few analytical examples of
simplified probalistic optimization of a production unit with stochastic
feedstock and stochastic sales prognosis. For more complicated systems,
this leads to stochastic simulation by Monte Carlo methods, for example an
intermediate storage system where both production system and the shipping
system have elements wich have stochastic characteristics of failures and
repair and delays in arrival and departure. An industrial program system
referred to as DISCAS will be discussed very briefly. All examples are
taken from Norsk Hydro applications.
