Abstract

The aggressiveness of a PI controller is defined and aquantitative characterization is given in relation to the ratio ofthe proportional and integral actions of the controller. Thisconcept provides simple analytic design relations for tuning PIcontrollers. It is illustrated by simulation results obtained witha test batch of processes representative of industrialapplications and by control of a real water tank. Such results showthe link between the aggressiveness of the controller and theminimum of the Integral-Time-Absolute-Error (ITAE) performanceindex.
