This work describes research on the potential of nanostructured materials as smoke clearing agents. Aggregates of metal oxide nanoparticles were investigated by deploying them into confined spaces containing glycol smoke. Effects of materials type, mass concentration, and deployment pressure were examined in a small-scale chamber and a room-scale chamber. Results indicate that several materials were successful in increasing the rate of smoke dissipation and improving the visibility in the smoke-filled chamber. The performance of nanostructured materials is compared with conventional particulate materials.
