Experimental investigations using in situ small-angle x-ray scattering have opened a new window into understanding of the nature of nanoparticle growth in aerosols. Recent results concerning nano-particle nucleation, growth and aggregation in pyrolytic synthesis will be discussed. Application of a new modeling approach to understanding branching in aggregates will be highlighted.
