Session 2 - Sunday Workshop for Faculty: Developing Student Skills in Self-Assessment
Self assessment is an important skill for students to acquire. Self assessment develops self confidence. Self assessment is expected of our graduates; it allows us to empower students with parts of the assessment process in our courses. This, in turn, improves learning because "Whoever owns the assessment, owns the learning". Assessment is a judgment as to the degree to which goals have been achieved.. Students begin a workshop on self assessment thinking "now I can give myself and my friends 100%" and they leave the workshop realizing that assessment is about performance, it is based on evidence and done in the context of published goals, measurable criteria and agreed-upon forms of evidence. Parts of the 4 to 6 hour workshop will be experienced in this workshop with participants practicing facilitating parts of the workshop. From this workshop you will have the materials, the timing sheets and the activities for the workshop. Examples will be given of resume writing, reflective journal writing and later learning activities that the students can now do based on the skills developed in this workshop.
