Dear 2011 American Control Conference Attendees and Contributors

On behalf of the American Control Automatic Council (A2C2) and the 2011 ACC Organizing Committee I would like to welcome you to this year’s American Control Conference being held at the San Francisco Hilton hotel during June 29 to July 1, 2011.  Following the tradition set forth by previous ACCs, this year’s conference has attracted about 1500 attendees representing industry, academia, and government agencies, as well as students with deep interest in Control Systems and Automation from across a wide variety of application areas. Through extensive and in-depth review of many high quality submitted papers, containing state of the art research and applications in the Automatic Control area, the Program Committee members accepted about 900 papers which have been organized into 18 daily parallel sessions, three special industry sessions, and two special educational sessions.

In addition to top quality conference with informative papers and presentations about the state of the art in the theory and practice of dynamic systems and automatic control, the 2011 ACC offers new and exciting features that will make it a memorable and top quality meeting for all participants and their family and friends. The city of San Francisco offers many attractions for all participants and their spouses, family members, and friends. This conference features industry presentations about the latest R&D advances in automatic control, major industry exhibits from US companies, special government panel, frontier sessions, and workshops related to the advances in automatic control. On Wednesday June 29, John Nelson from Lockheed Martin Corporation presents a plenary speech on “Technological Challenges of Human Space Transportation.” On Thursday June 30, Prof. Frank Doyle from UC Santa Barbara delivers an academic plenary on “Feedback Control of the Artificial Pancreas.” On Friday July 1, both industry and academic plenaries are presented by Prof. Domitilla Del Vecchio of MIT, “A Control Theory Approach to Engineering Bio-molecular Systems,” and Ray Piasecki of General Electric, “Smart Grid, an Enterprise View of Systems Control.”

Three special sessions are planned for Wednesday evening, and there are seven tutorial sessions, covering such topics as Control of Nanoscale Self Assembly, to Option Trading from a Control Perspective, to Control for Societal Challenges such as Energy and Sustainable Growth. Furthermore, there are special sessions designed to benefit the ACC participants. These sessions will cover such topics as Planning the Next Step after Obtaining a PhD Degree, to Funding Opportunities in Federal Agencies, and Unified Mechatronic Framework for Research. Of course, as has been the ACC tradition, at this conference we will recognize the achievements of our students, peers, and leaders of the control community.

The Organizing Committee of 2011ACC has devoted significant time and effort to assure this conference will be an exciting, educational and informative, and memorable for all attendees and their accompanied folks. I am grateful and indebted to everyone of the committee members for preparing such a successful conference. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you and thank you for your participation and your technical contributions. Please enjoy meeting your friends and colleagues in a unique and fabulous setting of the beautiful San Francisco, and enjoy the 2011ACC.
