Papers on "Plantwide control" and "Control structure design" by Sigurd Skogestad

Start: If you are new to the area of plantwide control then these two paper give a good starting point:

For a short introduction to my work on plantwide control, see here.
Newest: Our most recent paper was presented at the PSE-ESCAPE symposium in Copenhagen in June 2015:

2011-2014: There are four overview papers on plantwide control and control structure selection which I hope my be helpful.

The first one is written with jointly with Jim Downs (Eastman Co.) and stresses the need for a systematic procedure. It also gives some nice examples from the Eastman company.

  1. J.J. Downs and S. Skogestad, ``An industrial and academic perspective on plantwide control'', Annual Reviews in Control, 35, 99-110 (2011).
  2. The two next are actually quite similar, and both are book chapters on plantwide control:

  3. Chapter on "Economic plantwide control" from the book by Rangaiah and Kariwala (Editors) on Plantwide control. Recent Developments and Applications, Wiley, 2012. Note that I use the word "economic" to distiguish my procedure from other procedures, noteably the one by Luyben.

  4. Chapter on "plantwide control" from Ullmann's encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry which was published in 2012. Here, I summarize my procedure and also make some comments about the relationship to Luyben's procedure.

Finally, the following contribution is a bit more theoretical and general. It includes a summary of the "state drift" approach for selecting regulatory controlled variables (CV2):

  5. Chapter on "Control structure selection" from Springer Encyclopedia on Control Systems (2014/2015)

Original work. The abovementioned papers extend the work presented previously in

  • S. Skogestad, ``Control structure design for complete chemical plants'', Computers and Chemical Engineering, 28 (1-2), 219-234 (2004)

which again was based on the following papers which also reviews other literature:

  • T. Larsson and S. Skogestad, ``Plantwide control: A review and a new design procedure'' Modeling, Identification and Control, 21, 209-240 (2000).

In addition, Control structure design is the topic of Chapter 10 of the book

  • "Multivariable feedback control" by Skogestad and Postlewthwaite (Wiley; 1996, 2005)

In addition, we have written many more specific theoretical and application papers, especially on selection of primary controlled variables (CVs) based on self-optimizing control. You find them on my publication list. Some are:
