Dr.ing. (Ph.D. in engineering) studies at NTNU.
Requirements and procedures
for new applicants.
- The dr.ing. degree. To obtain a dr.ing.
(Ph.D. in engineering) degree the student must complete
a course program (about 1 years of study) and a thesis. The nominal
time for completing the degree is 3 years, but the average time
is about 4.5 years. At least 1 year must be spend in residence at
NTNU.
- Formal requirements for applicants. The formal requirement is to
have a siv.ing. (Norwegian Diploma Engineer, considered
similar to M.Sc.) degree or the
equivalent. Students with a different backgrounds are generally
required to supply their education with some extra
courses (tilleggsfag) which may be taken after the Ph.D.
study starts.
- Advisor. The student needs to find an advisor before applying
for admission. Only after this can the application be submitted. A
dr.ing. study therefore starts by first finding a faculty member
(Professor or førsteamanuensis ) who
is willing to be the advisor for the student.
- Financing. Most Norwegian students are financed by the
University, the Rerearch Council (NFR), industry or some other source.
Foreign students from third-world countries may in some cases get
financial support from Statens Lånekasse . Most financing
sources require that the student has found an advisor and has made
a draft application.
