I am a full time researcher at the Department of Electronic Systems (IES), where my main activities is at the NTNU Small Satellite Lab. My main research interests are SmallSats (CubeSats) for marine/arctic/oceanograpic use, including both remote sensing and communication challenges and multi-sensor and multi-domain integration. Our first satellite, the HYPSO-1, was launced in January '22 and is currently operational. A second satellite, the HYPSO-2, will be launched in Q2 2024. Both satellites carries an optical instrument for hyperspectral imaging, and HYPSO-2 will have an software defined radio (SDR) for RF interference measurements. From 2023, we are starting phase 0 studies for high spatial hyperspectral imaging and earth observation based on GNSS-R.My activities include project management and multidiciplinary project/research coordination. I also support the work of the students at Orbit NTNU with their FRAMSat-1, FRAMSat-1.5, SelfieSat and BioSat missions. SelfieSat was launched in 2022 and is now semi-operational. FRAMSat-1 is expected to be launched on the first launch from Andøya on an ISAR Spectrum launcher during 2024.
I defended my PhD in 2019, with the disertation titled On the use of Micro Satellites as Communication Nodes in an Arctic Sensor Network. At NTNU, I've started and contributed to several SmallSat projects, such as the student project NTNU Test Satellite (NUTS) from 2010 - 2017, HYPSO satellites from 2017 and FRAMSat-1 from 2020. I am also the NTNU POC for the ESA_Lab@NTNU initiative, as well as leader/coordinator for the Geminicenter for small satellittes together with SINTEF and UiO. Through that center, we organize a small satellite seminar every year, a meeting place for around 90 space interested participants.
Research interests and projects
My main interests are space technology in general, and SmallSats and their applications and interactions with autonomous sensor systems in remote areas, their communication potential, Arctic infrastructure and more. See the list of projects.Educational activities and courses
In addition to the main research activities, I have been regulary involved in lecturing and coordination of courses in addition to the development of the space technology course profile at NTNU. We are now aiming to shape a more unified education profile on space systems engineering. I have been part of the group defining this profile. From 2023, a specialization track for space systems is offered at both IES (electronic systems [in Norwegian]) and ITK (cybernetics [in Norwegian]).Courses and lectures

Outreach
I believe that communicating science and technology to the general public is very important. In addition to being an active participant in national and international conferences, contributor to various industrial and educational working-grups, my current main contribution in this context is acting as topic matter expert for satellites, rockets and remote sensing in the Norwegian online encyclopedia "Store Norske Leksikon". Eg er tilsett som fast forskar ved Institutt for Elektroniske systemer (IES), der eg jobbar mellom anna med prosjektleiing og som kordinator for NTNU SmallSat Lab. Dette innebær ulike ansvarsområde frå alt som studentveiledning, prosjektleiing og oppfylgjing av leverandørar, utvikling av satellittoppdrag og prosjekt (missions), hardware-utvikling, programvareutvikling, integrasjon og testing med meire. I tillegg er eg innvolvert i undervising og utvikling av romteknologistudiet ved NTNU.Frå hausten 2023 har vi ein felles fordjupingsprofil for 4. og 5.-årstudentar ved IES og ITK for romteknologi (versjon for IES) og ITK (versjon for ITK).
Arbeidsoppgåver
Arbeidsoppgåvene omfattar prosjektstyring, utvikling, design og bruk av småsatellittar til kommunikasjon og jordobservasjon. Saman med Institutt for teknisk kybernetikk (ITK) og tidlegare SFF AMOS (2012 -- 2023)har vi etablert ei betydeleg satsing på småsatelittar ved NTNU gjennom etableringa av NTNU SmallSatLab. Vi har pr. 2024 ein forskingssatellitt i bane (HYPSO-1) og oppskyting av HYPSO-2 skjer i 2024. Desse er utstyrte med både optiske system for jordobservasjon samt at HYPSO-2 har ein programvaredefinert radio (SDR). Frå 2020 er også SmallSatLab ein node i ESA sitt akademia-nettverk som ESA_Lab@NTNU.
Tidlegare har eg starta studentsatellittprosjektet ved NTNU (som før var kalla NUTS, no heiter det Orbit. Der var eg prosjektleiar frå oppstarten i oktober 2010 til 2014.
Forskningsinteresser
Hovudinteresseområda mine er romteknologi, små satellittar (CubeSats), samspel mellom satellittar og andre autonome farkstar, Arktis og elles det meste som er spanande og relevant innafor denne tematikken. Sjå oversikt over prosjekt. Eg var ferdig utdanna sivilingeniør ved IET med fordjuping i radiosystem i 2007. Etter det, og fram til eg tok til ved studentsatellittprosjektet jobba eg ved FFI i Horten med undervassensorar og undervasskommunikasjon.
