2006-06-13: Det blir nok jeg som skal forelese emnet til høsten. Jeg har ennå ikke begynt å planlegge. Men informasjon vil dukke opp her etterhvert.
2006-09-06: We switched the language of the lectures to English for the sake of some exchange students. As a result, these web pages will be sort of bilingual for a while.
2006-09-08: Notice some new information on exercises, below.
I have written a brief note on some topological concepts: Completeness and compactness in the complex numbers, and boundedness and uniform continuity of functions on compact sets. The contents of the note is not considered part of the core curriculum, and no questions will be asked about these on tests. I wrote them up for your information (pdf: A5 and A4 format). You should be aware of the main results outlined in the note, since I may use some of the concepts in other proofs later, but don't read the proofs unless you want to and have a little time to spare. The note is in Norwegian, and I don't have time to translate it to English, sorry.
Oh, and by the way, if you wish to know how the real numbers can be constructed, there is a nice article on Wikipedia.
2006-09-21: As you are aware, the lack of organized exercise sessions for this class turns out to have been a big bureaucratic mistake. Our first exercise session will be on Tuesday, 09:15–11:00 in S3. (That is, on the 26th.) In later weeks, exercises will be on Wednesdays, 08:15–10:00 (much too early for comfort). The location remains to be decided.
The note I have been telling you about, and lecturing from, and which has stolen too much of my time lately, is available. See under Syllabus below.
2006-10-11: The lecture on Thursday this week is cancelled because of a conflict with a midterm test in another class. I have sent an angry email to the (presumed) guilty party.
2006-09-26: Peter Lindqvist will lecture in my absence this week.
I have corrected some errors in my notes on the Cauchy integral theorem. In case you do not wish to print the whole note again, here is the list (old version 2006-09-21, new version 2006-09-26):
We have been assigned auditorium F6 for the exercise sessions Wednesdays 08:15–10:00. First time: Next week (2006-10-04).
2006-10-03: I have been late setting the date for the midterm test. As a result, I decided it is better to push it back a little and hold it in week 43 to give everyone a chance to plan. It is best to hold it during the regular lecture hour on Thursday, in other words Thursday 26th October 12:15–14:00 in S6.
2006-10-23: Students ask what is the required syllabus for the midterm test. The answer is: Those parts of chapters 1–3 that I have lectured on (essentially the parts listed in the provisional syllabus) plus 4.1 and 4.2.
Don't forget to bring your student card to the test.
2006-10-30: Answers for the midterm test are available from the page of old exam problems.
2006-11-01: There were three mistakes in my answers for the midterm test, now corrected. I also put out a scan of some quick notes outlining a solution.
2006-11-03: Here's a funny cartoon about complex numbers. Unfortunately, there is a sign mistake in it, but never mind that. (Added 2006-11-06: The sign mistake has been corrected.)
2006-11-06: Extra lecture on Wednesday. There will be an extra lecture on Wednesday, 10:15–12:00 in R2. More detailed plans under the Lectures heading.
2006-12-03: I have finally put together the formula sheet(s) for the exam. You will find it under the Examinations heading below. Please let me know if you find any misprints or errors in it.
I have set aside office hours on Tuesday 5th and Monday 11th December, during the hours 13:00–16:00 both days. I'll be in my office and ready to answer questions.
2006-12-10: I am now returning the last of the answers to exercises that have been turned in. I am sorry about the delay.
2006-12-12: Today's exam problem (with misprint corrected) and a suggested solution is posted together with the other old exam problems. I apologize for the misprints, and hope that you found the extra hour to be adequate compensation.
A special note to the student who asked about a misprint in problem 2c: I was caught off balance from the other misprint, so I agreed too quickly that there was a misprint in 2c. There wasn't. But since I agreed with your mistake, I shall remember this and not subtract any points for it (which probably happened because you had forgotten the final i in sin θ=(eiθ−e−iθ)/(2i)).
