Ocean Wave Energy Fundamentals
WAVETRAIN RTN "Short Course", arranged
23 May - 3 June 2005, at
Chalmers University of Technology,
Göteborg, Sweden
Within the frame of the
WAVETRAIN RTN a two-week "Short Course" was held at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden from 23 May to 3 June 2005. The content for each of the ten course days is shown in a PDF-file table. During the first three days a somewhat simplified, but rather complete, introduction to waves and wave-energy conversion was given. The course was primarily organised for the young researchers participating in the WAVETRAIN RTN, but was open also to other interested researchers. Altogether 25 persons attended the course, 22 of them during both weeks. The main textbook for the matter taught is J. Falnes: Ocean Waves and Oscillating Systems (
Cambridge University Press, 2002).For most of the lectures given during the first three days, suitable reading is to be found in
(a) three PDF files available at
http://www.ntnu.no/~falnes/teach/wave/wave.htm,(b) S.H. Salter: World progress in wave energy - 1988, Int. J. Ambient Energy, 10, 1989, pp. 3-24, and

Additional reading related to some of the lectures given during course days 4 and 6-8 is to be found in
(d) handed-out paper copies of PPt presentations used in Bergdahl's lectures on
real sea waves as well as on small-body approximation, and(e) J. Falnes:
Topics on Extraction of Ocean-wave Energy, (lecture notes, NTNU, Trondheim, 2002)The principal lecturer was Prof. Emeritus
Johannes Falnes , (NTNU, Trondheim, Norway). Some of the lectures were given by Prof. Lars Bergdahl, (Chalmers), the host of the event. Both of them took part in instructing exercise work.
