Danny McNamee

Update November 1997

In July 1997, Danny McNamee's case made legal history by becoming the first
case to be referred back to the Court of Appeal by the newly established
Criminal Cases Review Commission. The CCRC referred the case for a full
hearing by the court on the basis of non-disclosure by the prosecution and
police of evidence that could have led to his acquittal in 1987. They also
posed questions about the provenance of the fingerprint evidence against
Danny McNamee which they said the defence had a right to be answered in a
court of law.

This new court hearing is likely to take place in March or April of 1998
and represents Danny McNamee's best chance to date of clearing his name and
regaining his freedom.

In June 1997, Danny was transferred to the Maze prison in the north of
Ireland in order to be closer his family and friends. Following sustained
lobbying on his behalf, the English prison service finally de-categorised
him from "Exceptionally High Risk" to "High Risk Category A" on the 22nd of
October. His health and morale have improved dramatically since his move
home and de-categorisation.

The Danny McNamee Campaign wish to sincerely thank everyone who has ever
written a letter to the English authorities about this case - we know that
the public pressure that has been building up has helped immensely. You
can help once again by sending Danny a Christmas card or "Good Luck" card
prior to his appeal. And ask your friends to do the same - the more public
correspondence that he gets, the more the authorities will know that his
appeal is being watched with interest. Don't let them get away with
keeping this innocent man in prison.
