INS Decides Elian Gonzales Belongs with his Father;
US Government to Free Abducted Cuban Child to Return Home.

New York, January 5, 2000 -- The New York Times is reporting this
afternoon that the INS has decided "custody of Elian Gonzalez" should
rightfully be granted to his father and family in Cuba. (As if the US
Government has any right to "grant custody" of any Cuban child under any
circumstances whatsoever.)

This decision represents the successful conclusion of Cuba's long,
enormously energetic national campaign for the freedom of this
Cuban child to return to his home and family following the horrific trauma
of the death at sea of his mother and her companion, who abducted the
child illegally and without any notice to the rest of his family, which
was cruel enough.

That the child had to witness the death of his mother by drowning, in her
foolish bid for illusory riches in the "land of opportunity," caused him
enormous suffering that will take years to recover from, if he ever can.
He survived a horrible life-threatening abduction and watched his mother
die, only to be subjected to further psychological abuse when he was
turned into a political circus act by the cynical and hysterical Miami
exiles, with the craven complicity of the US Government and mainstream
media.

We hope that this disgraceful episode will be rapidly ended by the prompt
return of this child to his home, and that the United States Government
will provide a public apology, and payment of damages, which may help
somewhat to assist Elian and his family to heal the profound
and long-lasting harm he has been caused by the United States' vindictive
and vengeful campaign of hatred against the people and government of
Cuba. Elian Gonzalez and his family deserve respect, dignified
assistance, and above all, privacy, from this point forward.
