Practical information about Trondheim and accomodation
Arriving Trondheim
Usually, people arrive in Trondheim by plane. The airport is located
70 km north of the city. There are both buses and trains going to the
city centre. The buses cost about 50 NOK, and leave about every 20 minutes.
They take 30-45 minutes, depending on where in the city you want to go.
The trains go much less frequently, about every hour in the rush hour.
At other times, for example on Sundays, there may be several hours between
the trains. The train is also slower, it takes about one hour. The
train is slightly less expensive than the bus. It is also possible to rent
a car at the airport, but this is extremely expensive compared to other
countries.
It is also possible to go by train from Oslo to Trondheim. It costs about
the same as by plane, and it takes seven hours. The plane takes one hour.
The train station is in the city centre.
If you ask the bus driver to drop you off at the main square of Trondheim,
where the statue of Olav Trygvasson is, there are buses and taxis. A taxi
to a hotel may cost about 50-100 NOK, and the buses cost about 20 NOK.

Accommodation
There are five types of accomodation available:
- hotels
- apartment-hotels
- Vandrehjem
- university accomodation
- student housing
Hotels
There are a large number of hotels, with varying price range.
One of the least expensive hotels (550-600 NOK) with reasonably
good quality is the "Elgseter Hotell" (Tel. 7394 2540, Fax. 7393 1873).
They give a small discount if you book through the university.
This hotel is located 15 minutes walk away from our department.
Apartment-hotels
The apartment-hotels have lower prices than hotels, and less service.
Your rent a small apartment for a short time.

Vandrehjem
The Vandrehjem is a kind of high-standard youth hostel that take
travellers of all ages. Tel. 7353 0490, Fax. 7353 5288.
It is clean and well organized. They have several types of rooms:
A bed in a room with four people: 195 NOK

A bed in a single room: 395 NOK
The prices are for one night, and in August-2000.
If you stay more than one week, there will be a discount of
25 NOK for those days.
At the Vandrehjem, the price includes breakfast. This is a
self-serve buffet of bread, butter, jams, cheese, ham, cereal,
milk, coffe and tea.
The Vandrehjem is about 45 minutes away by foot. Alternatively,
it is possible to take the bus (20 NOK). It is necessary to
change buses at "Studentersamfundet", a red round building.
University accomodation
The university accomodation is a room in a house, with access to
a kitchen. The price is slightly lower than the youth hostel.
There is very high demand for these rooms, and one has to book
several months in advance.
Student accomodation
The student accomodation is the least expensive. It is only meant
for students staying for a longer time, for example in the ERASMUS
programme. The accomodation is organized by the
International Office
at the university.
