General

The training grounds give new characters a kick start by providing them with levels, skills, items and gameplay experience before entering the outside world.

Quick and Dry

Note that NPCs who give experience will not raise you above base level 8 or job level 7. The only exception is Muriel, who will raise you to base level 9. This means there's no point in leveling in the arena before talking to the NPCs, as they can take you to 9/7 already.

Detailed Walkthrough

When you first arrive at the Novice Training Grounds you are greeted by Shion. Talking to Shion will give you a quick run through about the various windows you see on screen such as the Basic Information Window in the top left corner, the Chat Window at the bottom and the mini-map in the top right. You are then asked to proceed across the bridge and enter the castle.

Inside, you meet the Training Grounds Receptionist (Receptionist). You are given a choice to move immediately to the world of Rune-Midgard or to apply for training. Going through training is highly recommended for new players. It is also beneficial to veterans as there are some benefits. If you choose Direct access to Ragnarok Online, you will be sent to a random starting town. If applying for training you will be sent to the next room in the castle. Note: if you stop though a lesson for too long, the NPC will stop the dialogue (which is the case with all NPCs), but also you cannot go through the lesson again, therefore missing out on items)

There are three Tutors in this room that you should talk to. These are Kris the Crusader (Interfaces Tutor), Cecil the Monk (Skills Tutor), and Alice the Blacksmith (Items Tutor). Talking to these three tutors can be skipped, however the tutors you will give you experience, the skill First Aid (Cecil), as well as a set of Novice-only equipment that is far superior to the Cotton Shirt and Knife you would otherwise be using during Combat Training. After talking to Kris, Cecil and Alice, you should proceed to the east room.

In this colorful room Edwin (Instructor), Jare Riotte (Somatomology Instructor), and Leo Handerson (Understandings of Skill) await to instruct you about various aspects of the game. These include a basic game interface tutorial, how status points affect your character's abilities, and what the Basic Skills allow you to do. When you done talking to the Instructors, exit the room and ask the Kafra Employee to teleport you to Combat Training.

There are 3 NPCs in this room; Elmeen (Helper), a Potato Merchant NPC, and Muriel (Entrance Guard). Elmeen will introduce you to the Battle System of Ragnarok Online, explaining how experience, monsters, and items work. You can sell items you no longer need and loot that you will find during combat to the Potato Merchant. Talk to Muriel to begin Combat Training. She will give you some equipment and items to help you. You are required to increase your base level least twice before you can proceed. The amount of time spent for this portion of the Training Grounds is up to you. You can exit and proceed to the personality test as soon as you level up twice or you can go all the way to Job Level 10 before exiting. When you have decided to leave talk to Keyman (Test Examiner) at the north exit to enter the castle. There are two areas for Combat Training. If the first is too not challenging enough you can talk to Hoffman (Trainer) to go to the second area.

Talk to Bruce first to learn about the different First Jobs. After you have been learned about at least one, talk to Hanson to take the personality test. After answering a few questions, Hanson will suggest a job that might fit your personality. You can follow this recommendation or choose the job you really had your heart set on. If you choose a job that was not recommended, you will be sent to the starting town of that job class; Izlude for Swordsman, Morroc for Thief, Geffen for Mage, Prontera for Acolyte, Alberta for Merchant, and Payon for Archer. If you accept the suggested job, Hanson will give you some subsidy before you are sent to the appropriate town.
