the sound z as in "zoo"
the sound s as in "say" (or "wise")
the sound c as in "ice"
the sound x as in "xylophone"
These are similar sounds.  The sound z is voiced (you use both your voice box and your mouth to say z),
whereas the sounds s and c are unvoiced (you do not use your voice box.)
To remember that these sounds make 0, you might think of the word  Zero.
Double-s or double-z as in essay, or whizz, counts as a single 0
(The pseudonumeral S is actually pronounced "iss", and is written S or iS.)
